Fatigue life estimation of structures under statistically and spectrally similar variable amplitude loading

چکیده
Engineering fatigue is a very prevalent and dangerous phenomenon that limits the useful life span of mechanical structures. It can be found in most engineered structures machinery are made from metallic or composite materials. The prediction methodology under variable amplitude loading (VAL), however, has not reached maturity due to complexity loading. This results load sequence effects, which significantly alter life. Since realistic experienced by nature, corresponding responses at defect site highly irregular, characterization VAL its resulting damage paramount. Fatigue estimation conventionally uses methods based on Miner's Rule cumulative rule (CDR) conjunction with rainflow counting method. However, CDR does account for interaction/sequence effects induced local residual stress (or crack opening stress) variations.

Strip yield modelling of fatigue crack under variable amplitude loading
The results from ‘strip yield’ approach of the FASTRAN type models of plasticity induced crack closure effects of fatigue cracks subjected to variable amplitude loadings are presented. The strip yield results are compared with authors’ finite element (FE) and experimental results. It has been observed that the strip yield model is seen to be fundamentally limited by choice of α (constraint fact...
متن کاملStochastic fatigue damage modeling under variable amplitude loading
A general methodology for stochastic fatigue life prediction under variable amplitude loading is proposed in this paper. The methodology combines a nonlinear fatigue damage accumulation rule and a stochastic S–N curve representation technique to achieve this objective. The nonlinear damage accumulation rule proposed in this paper improves the deficiencies inherent in the linear damage accumulat...
متن کاملDifferent Fatigue Dynamics Under Statistically and Spectrally Similar Deterministic and Stochastic Excitations
Estimating and tracking crack growth dynamics is essential for fatigue failure prediction. A new experimental system— coupling structural and crack growth dynamics—was used to show fatigue damage accumulation is different under chaotic (i.e., deterministic) and stochastic (i.e., random) loading, even when both excitations possess the same spectral and statistical signatures. Furthermore, the co...

This paper presents an overview of our recent enhanced 3D extended finite element toolkit for Abaqus (XFA3D) for fatigue damage assessment of welded aluminum structures under block loading. To alleviate the computational burden associated with the insertion and propagation of arbitrary cracks in the presence of a welding induced residual stress field, a nodal enriched displacement field coupled...
متن کاملAnalyses of Fatigue and Fatigue-crack Growth under Constant- and Variable-amplitude Loading
Studies on the growth of small cracks have led to the observation that fatigue life of many engineering materials is primarily “crack growth” from micro-structural features, such as inclusion particles, voids, slip-bands or from manufacturing defects. This paper reviews the capabilities of a plasticity-induced crack-closure model to predict fatigue lives of metallic materials using “small-crack...
